Mantodea is the scientific name for the order of insects known as praying mantises. The word comes from the Greek words mantis, meaning "prophet", and eidos, meaning "form or type". The name refers to the way praying mantises hold their front legs, which are folded under their bodies in a posture similar to prayer.
